South Point and Black Sand Beach

On Monday we backtracked slightly so we could go to primary destinations of South Point and to a Black Sand Beach.

South Point is the southernmost point in the 50  United States.  Not to be confused with Key West which is the southernmost point in the continental United States and being a little more accessible probably gets more fame.

South Point is kind of desolate and certainly isolated.  It is also a very windy place.  We passed at least one wind farm on the way in and the strong winds cause some trees to become almost horizontal with their branches all growing in the same direction near the ground.  Well we didn't get to the actual Southern point. We got awfully close. The actual Southern Point probably depends on the tide and is on slippery rocks down near the shore.  With child in tow this was close enough.

After leaving South Point we started heading back towards volcano.  We stopped in a really small town of Waiohinu, to see a tree that was planted by Mark Twain in 1866.  While storm did knock the tree over in 1957, a new tree has grown from its sprouts.

After this, we're getting hungry again.  While it was probably only 10:00 in the morning, we hadn't eaten in almost 6 hours. On the way through town the other day we had spotted this bakery, Punalu'u bakery that looked really good but it was closed at the time.  Like most things around here, they claim to be the southernmost bakery in the USA.  We knew on a weekend in the morning it would be open so we stopped by.  As soon as we open the door of the car, the smells were absolutely delicious. We knew right away we wanted to buy everything.  We saddled on more malasadas plus a loaf of taro bread and a loaf of guava bread.  All were in fact delicious.

After a delightful second breakfast, we did finally head back towards Volcano and our Airbnb, but not before making two additional stops.

The next stop was a black sand beach called Punalu'u.  This type of black sand beach is not the fine sand that you'd find in most beaches, but more coarse.  It is creative on lava reaches the ocean and cools very quickly, kind of exploding into tiny pieces of sand.   The water isn't very good for swimming as the waves are rough and is kind of rocky.  There are also a bunch of large green sea turtles living there which was kind of cool.
