South Point is the southernmost point in the 50 United States. Not to be confused with Key West which is the southernmost point in the continental United States and being a little more accessible probably gets more fame.
South Point is kind of desolate and certainly isolated. It is also a very windy place. We passed at least one wind farm on the way in and the strong winds cause some trees to become almost horizontal with their branches all growing in the same direction near the ground. Well we didn't get to the actual Southern point. We got awfully close. The actual Southern Point probably depends on the tide and is on slippery rocks down near the shore. With child in tow this was close enough.
After leaving South Point we started heading back towards volcano. We stopped in a really small town of Waiohinu, to see a tree that was planted by Mark Twain in 1866. While storm did knock the tree over in 1957, a new tree has grown from its sprouts.
After this, we're getting hungry again. While it was probably only 10:00 in the morning, we hadn't eaten in almost 6 hours. On the way through town the other day we had spotted this bakery, Punalu'u bakery that looked really good but it was closed at the time. Like most things around here, they claim to be the southernmost bakery in the USA. We knew on a weekend in the morning it would be open so we stopped by. As soon as we open the door of the car, the smells were absolutely delicious. We knew right away we wanted to buy everything. We saddled on more malasadas plus a loaf of taro bread and a loaf of guava bread. All were in fact delicious.
